We all know what recycling is, and it can only be a good thing. Nobody likes waste in this day and age, and many of us want to be eco-friendly too. So we recycle. Recycling is great, but there’s something you should know about. Recycling has a creative counterpart: it’s called ‘upcycling’, and it’s a way to inject some creative flair into seemingly useless or redundant items that you’d otherwise have recycled, or binned.
When moving into your new Costa del Sol home, you may be wondering what to do with your old furniture and household items. Upcycling is the answer! There are so many great things you can do with your old stuff that might make you consider hanging onto it, but if you’re new to upcycling you might not be sure where to start. Here’s the lowdown:
Upcycling is easy to do
Perhaps you’re thinking ‘but I have no creative skills!’… well, don’t worry, upcycling need not be difficult – or costly. There are countless ways to repurpose almost everything in your home, and there’s something very rewarding about having designed, or simply put your own touches to items in the home. Your new apartment on the Costa del Sol may soon be that little bit more you than you anticipated!
The first step is to decide what is clutter, and separate it from the more useful items in your home. Next, have a think about what kind of items you might need more of, like plant pots, tables, bookshelves, lamp shades, etc. Then at least you have a list of potential creative projects. If you’ve got a family, you might want to turn it into a creative project with the kids. Now you’ve got no excuses!
Check out the inspiration we’ve provided below:
- Pot plants
If you like nature around the home, you can never have enough pot plants. Almost anything you can think of that’s got a hollow centre can become a pot plant. Scan your home with new eyes, and you’ll soon find yourself turning cans, ornaments, toys, kitchen items, pallets, and even old boxes or suitcases into plant pots. The bigger the item, the more plants you can house in them. Your rooms or garden could be transformed into a natural paradise, if you see fit!
- Bedroom furniture
‘Shabby chic’ was a term coined through popularity, and it’s still embraced by many, perhaps because it’s so much fun to put together! Eclectic is the name of the game, and you can make things as eclectic as you like when you’re the one redesigning each item.
Grab a tired old chair and make a new cover and cushions for it (old cardigans can make great covers!), varnish the legs, or stencil some cool artwork onto it. Paint a stool with chalky paint. The same goes for bedside cabinets; paint them with a cool colour and hand-paint details, use stencils or put arty stickers or retro patterned wallpaper all over it.
Use old window shutters to create arty bed headboards, make tables out of old dressing table drawers, wooden pallets or scrap wood… there is no end to the possibilities of what you might create to make your bedrooms colourful and inviting. Wander around the home with a creative eye and see what your imagination says.
- Extra storage
Sometimes a home appears cluttered because there simply isn’t enough storage space to hold everything. Upcycling is a great way to remedy that. Turn household items into containers and shelving – even an old ladder can be painted and mounted on the wall to make for an unusual, arty bookshelf!
Again, chests of drawers can be totally restyled or perhaps stacked one on top of the other; you might even consider buying second hand or garage sale junk and upcycling that to create the perfect space saving items in your home.
DIYers and craft fanatics just love to create beautiful lamps and there are so many inspiring examples all over the net. Common upcycling materials include mason jars and glass bottles, and you can consider using candlestick holders, bird’s cages, bins, plastic bowls and driftwood. Pop down to Marbella’s coastline to see which of nature’s cast-offs might work well! Paper mache is a useful tool for upcycling items into lighting, as are acrylic paints, wool, and cotton.
But I need to get rid of my clutter because I’m moving house!
After purchasing that dream property for sale in Marbella, you may suddenly realise that you have more ‘stuff’ than you’re comfortable with. When it comes to the time you need to transport it, and the chances are (especially if you’re moving to a new country) that you’re not going to be able to take everything with you.
The good news is that if you do a good job of upcycling your clutter, you might be able to make a sale out of it. If you want your upcycled items for your new home, you’ll just need to make things so much more attractive that you end up keeping the older stuff and ditching things that now seem less crucial!
