Renovations can be quite exciting. Picture it: you’ve just secured your new property in Marbella and you’re all set to move in. However, as is often the case, there are a few things you’d like to change in order to make the new place more ‘you’. Imagining the updated version of the property and the life you’ll have inside it gives you a warm feeling… and so it should!
There are probably going to be a few things you’ll need to figure out though, if this property is going to be all that you dreamed of. It could be as simple as some more appealing paintwork, or perhaps you’re planning to change the entire bathroom.
Let’s compare some of the possibilities you might be considering for your future renovations:
- Kitchen or bathroom
Some people will want to do both, but for arguments sake, let’s assume you’ve only got the finances to cover one of them. Which one will you go for? It’s a tough choice, as both can add significant value to a home. Likewise, a poor quality kitchen or bathroom can detract from it.
As it happens, we recommend that you opt for the kitchen, if you’re stuck. It tends to make the biggest impact on buyers, when the time comes to sell. A shabby kitchen can really put people off, and for you personally, it’s not very motivating to cook and eat in one! Kitchen renovations are more convenient that bathroom renovations too, for obvious reasons.
On the downside, the kitchen might cost you more than the bathroom to renovate, depending on your taste; it will probably also take longer to complete.
- New flooring
There are a few options for new flooring, but let’s take a look at two of the most probable choices: tiles or wood.
Actually, you can even get tiles that look like wood… just to thicken the plot! Tiles that look like wood might sound a little strange, but they make sense. You get the lovely wooden look, but your floor is easier to maintain and keep clean.
Taking care of wooden floorboards isn’t too difficult though. It’s also a timeless look that can give real warmth to a home. Having said that, if you have pets, their claws may wreak havoc on your new flooring, so that’s worth taking into account.
If you’re considering tiles, well, they can look great. But remember that they are pretty cold to the touch, so if you have poor circulation in your feet, be prepared to live in slippers. It also hurts more if you take a tumble onto the tiles!
When installing a new counter, two of the most popular choices are quartz and granite.
As it happens, quartz is increasingly popular in kitchens today. In previous years, the favourite was always granite, but it looks like quartz is finally in the lead. Granite may be considered a little dated by modern buyers, so keep that in mind if you think you may end up selling your home at some point.
- Colour schemes
Let’s assume that you’re going to go with something relatively neutral. Two of the most popular colours are grey and beige. They create a backdrop that you can match with most colour schemes, in terms of furniture and accessories.
Beige is considered by some to be a little dated. Yet grey might not have the longevity you are aiming for. Why don’t you think about mixing the two together? You’ll still get a neutral tone that works well with everything else… ‘greige’ is the new black, so to speak!
- Cooking appliances
Almost everyone likes to feel that they have a well-equipped kitchen, even if their cooking skills are a little below par! Let’s assume you’ll want to cook up a storm in your new home from time to time. Will you go with gas or electric?
Firstly, you might want to consider which one will cost you the most to use – but that depends on the area you’re living in.
Not many master chefs will tell you to go with electric. Gas is superior in terms of performance, as you’ll get more control over the temperatures, much more quickly. There’s not much waiting time for things to heat up, which is great when you are in a hurry.
On the other hand, electric is a good choice for those with young families. Electric is seen as a safer bet, and electric hobs tend to be a bit easier to clean.
