Marbella’s famous Golden Mile begins on the city’s western edge, at Plaza Bocanegra. It stretches across approximately 5km up to the Río Verde, situated in front of the equally famous Puerto Banús marina. In stark contrast, the first ever Golden Mile was in Blackpool, UK; a seaside resort that, although still a popular one, doesn’t have an ounce of Marbella’s class. Blackpool’s promenade was given this tongue-in-cheek reference because of the exorbitant number of slot machines!
It was back in the 80s that a German singer (and later property developer) by the name of Roy Boston coined the term for Marbella’s Golden Mile. He now has a road named after him, close to one of his developments (Alhambra del Mar). Marbella’s version earned the name for entirely different reasons, as will be evident to anyone who comes here.
The Golden Mile has Roman origins
Our Golden Mile is a more famous around the world than it ever has been, and now there is even a ‘New Golden Mile’, albeit unofficial, running along the coast between San Pedro and Estepona. The Marbella Golden Mile was once the main N340 coast road, and it is considered to be Roman in origin. This is evidenced by its straight lines – something that the Romans were renowned for.
The existence of the ever-popular Puente Romano Beach Resort and Spa is a further nod to these origins. In fact, the Golden Mile is home to some of Marbella’s earliest and most luxurious developments. As well as the stunning Puente Romano district, there is the 5 starMarbella Club Hotel, built in 1954.
The Marbella Club Hotel oozes charm. As well as super-luxurious facilities, this hotel boasts breathtaking gardens with an amazing assortment of trees, including pines, acacias, olive and avocado trees… it must be seen to be believed. This hotel was the one to kick start high-end tourism in the area, shaping the Golden Mile’s reputation into what it is today.
It isn’t difficult to imagine why Roy Boston decided to name the Golden Mile. This area has an abundance of golden sandy beach soaked in the ever-shining Costa del Sol sun, and the Real Estate here is second to none; along the beachfront are countless deluxe properties fit for a king. Prices are as you would expect for such an affluent and beautiful area – the Golden Mile screams opulence. It’s a milestone that many would love to reach in this lifetime.
The rich and famous love the Golden Mile
This also explains why the Golden Mile is so attractive to celebrities. The stunning homes here are mesmerizing to look at, invoking fantasies in passers by. They are palatial, and of course palatial is sought by the celebrities and royals alike!
People want to come on holiday here as much as they want to live here, so this spot is thriving at all times. Here you can find many, many 5 star hotels, an abundance of business centres and enough golf courses to keep you busy for a long time. As you might expect, with these kind of establishments come restaurants of the highest calibre. You can expect world-class dining experiences here.
The same goes for shopping. The Golden Mile is dotted with boutiques and designer brands. If it is of the highest quality, you can find it here on the Golden Mile. There are clothes shops, speciality foods, interior design shops, jewelry stores and shopping complexes.
